Why security awareness training matters
No technology can stop an employee from clicking a malicious link. Email filters and endpoint tools reduce exposure, but one click on a convincing phishing email can still open the door. Security awareness training closes that gap and turns your employees into a human firewall.
An effective program lowers the odds that your team falls for an attack. It also helps you meet industry compliance requirements, protect your reputation, and build customer trust.
The risk is growing. Verizon’s 2026 Data Breach Investigations Report found the human element present in 62% of breaches, up from 60% the year before. Attackers are also using AI to scale their attacks. IBM’s 2026 Cost of a Data Breach Report found that one in four malicious breaches were AI-enabled, at an average cost of $6 million, roughly $1 million more than the $4.99 million global average.
Not every program delivers those results. The following steps indicate a well-built and effective security awareness training program.
The steps to building an effective program
1. A baseline that measures your real risk
Every effective program starts by finding out where you are vulnerable. A baseline phishing test measures your organization’s Phish-prone percentage and pinpoints the users most likely to click. It also shows which types of phishing attacks succeed most often.
That baseline becomes the benchmark you measure progress against. It also tells you where to focus training first.
2. Managed training on current threats
Training should cover the tactics attackers use every day: phishing, malware, malicious spam, and other forms of social engineering. It should also keep pace with newer threats such as AI-driven attacks, BEC, and deepfakes. Where needed, tailor content to your industry and compliance requirements.
Completion matters as much as content. Your partner should verify that every employee finishes training and automatically retrain the users who keep clicking.
3. Ongoing, realistic phishing simulations
One test a year does not change behavior. Regular simulations let employees apply their training under realistic conditions. Stronger programs use real-world templates and “anti-prairie dog” campaigns, which send tests at random to make scenarios more realistic.
Simulations should also build the reporting habit. A one-click button to report suspicious email helps employees flag threats fast. Quick reporting limits losses and stops malicious messages from spreading across the organization.
4. Reporting that proves risk is going down
Reporting shows whether the program works. Measured against your baseline, it should track user actions, failure-rate trends over time, and follow-up recommendations.
Behavior data tells only part of the story. Anonymous surveys and self-reporting reveal shifts in attitude, and culture is one of your best defenses against human-factor threats. Over time, an ethos of awareness, vigilance, and action becomes self-reinforcing.
How CyberMaxx delivers all four
CyberMaxx Security Awareness Training finds your phish-prone users, trains them, and tests them every month. The program is fully managed, with reporting that proves your risk is going down.
| Phase | Goal | What CyberMaxx does |
| 01 Baseline | Know your risk | Handles email whitelisting and Active Directory integration. Runs a baseline phishing test to measure your Phish-prone % and pinpoint the users most likely to click. |
| 02 Train | Build awareness | Delivers a 45-minute Kevin Mitnick course for all users. Runs quarterly campaigns on current threats (AI, BEC, deepfakes) and automatically retrains repeat clickers. |
| 03 Test & Reinforce | Stay sharp | Sends monthly AI-driven, randomized phishing simulations. Provides a one-click Phish Alert button to report suspicious email, plus monthly newsletters with security hints and tips. |
Your team does not have to build or run any of it. CyberMaxx schedules and runs every campaign.
